Fractal Kitties!
It’s nice to know that if you ever need a cat picture in the future, you might one day be able to use mathematics to draw one. You’re looking at a “fractal kitty” whose shape was approximated by applying a type of fractal version of a complex pattern called a Julia set.
Head over to Scientific American to find out how these can be used to approximate shapes like cats, hearts, and other cute math-related stuff.

Invisible Children; doing it wrong, or just not perfect?

okay, gods damn it, retraction(kind of): the LRA/uganda kids/joseph kony video is by Invisible Children and there is a bunch of mixed info out there about how trustworthy a group they are. What the video said to me was : this man is at the top of the ICC’s most wanted list, a lot of people don’t know about him, he should be arrested; help spread the word on who he his. I agree with all that, and it didn’t ask me for money.
However, after looking through a LOT of arguments for and against the NGO the Invisible Children (better business bureau vs. charity navigator, emigrant ugandans both bitter and grateful, a group who seems to believe they are part of some U.S. military conquer africa scheme, and FINALLY a moderate view of an independent traveler who has been to the region) i finally reached this conclusion:
I think awareness of Joseph Kony should be raised, and he should be arrested. BUT they DO want me to buy their own posters to put up, instead of just independent signal boost. So i don’t know, don’t give them money, but this guy is horrible and should be stopped and i’m glad SOMEone is doing SOMEthing.

please watch this and don’t click “like”, click “reblog”.

I’m excited that this video has been reblogged over 2,000 times, and I’m really bummed that only 3 of my actual friends have reblogged it. Maybe it’s because I posted it late last night, so I’m putting it out there again.

I’m talking specifically to my friends and the people who follow me that haven’t reblogged this.  Please watch.  It’s important.  Don’t just hit “like”.  Pass it on.  I’ll get back to posting my usual stupid, goofy pics and videos later, but for now, this is more important.

and for those of you who have watched and passed it on, thank you!

Jokes later.

I may cry. I want in. Let’s start with this goal, and keep moving forward

and in the desert, too! what if we went up, instead of out? what if we engineered the buildings to work WITH the local environment? y’know, instead of using building materials and designs of the past, created to fight against the elements. i’m just sayin’. Actually, some very gifted and proactive architectural engineers (like the Bjarke Ingels Group)  are addressing these issues, thank gods.

We are told ceaselessly that sustainable or organic agriculture cannot feed the world. I find this claim very hard to understand.
